CURVY @ The Galeries

Via a stunning, free to the public exhibition – Curvy transformed Sydney CBD fashion retail hub The Galeries, with suspended, oversized works of art throughout the space, and exhibited original art pieces in select retail stores.

Viewed by over 1 million people(!) – this one of a kind exhibit saw The Galeries main area become home to a selection of limited edition art works created by some of the world’s most celebrated female artists including Fafi, who along with Sarah, founder of Colette Paris, co-curated this year’s Curvy book.

Other featured artists in the main foyer included Noferin, Amandine Urruty, Courtney Brims, Rilla Alexander, Melissa Haslam, Irina Dakeva and Kaitlin Beckett. An additional array of work, biogs and interactive elements from each featured artist were also on display.

As if the lovely ladies in the main thoroughfare weren’t enough though,  Curvy brought you nine more female favourites, suspended from the walls of The Galeries stores.

Their work varied from illustration to stenciling to watercolour. Each distinctive style revealed equally memorable characters both on canvas and in the hands that created them.

Curvy then took this a step further via the Galeries website - we went shopping with Sarah Larnach, conjured a fairytale character with Kirbee Lawler, dressed some Kelly Thompson girls, went behind the creation with Nicole Tattersall and went post-it noting with Fee Harding of Burnt Feather. We’d like to extend a huge thankyou to our CURVY @ The Galeries artists:  Fafi, Noferin, Amandine Urruty, Courtney Brims, Rilla Alexander, Melissa Haslam, Irina Dakeva, Kaitlin Beckett, Sarah Larnach, Kirbee Lawler, Yuki Nakano, Kelly Thompson, Nicole Tattersall, Fee Harding, Kareena Zerefos and Caroline Mudge.

THE LIVE ART BATTLES – Presented by BOCA LUPO

Represented by Bridge Stehli and Melbourne’s graf queen Deb, the girls paired up against Mike Watt and Houl – a couple of Sydney’s most defiant artists – in a live two hour art battle. Check out the BOCA LUPO Facebook page for videos from the night.  Special thanks to Shannon and our partners at Secret Wars for making this happen.  See more about the Secret Wars program and their event schedule at their official website and don’t miss their next event in your home town!

On the two Thursday nights that followed, the battle canvas was thrown open to the public.  Aspiring and underground art impresarios were given the chance to step up and flex their creative muscles for the chance to showcase their work at one of the top Sydney art galleries & a public showing at Lane 4 (a new artist laneway project @ The Galeries).

Each week there was 2 battles with each artist armed only with black felt tip markers. Throughout the battle period, guests, patrons, consumers and art lovers alike influenced the outcome by voting on the night as they watch the artists go head-to-head for 60 minutes.

At the end of the two-week competition, the 8 artworks created were posted onto the Galeries Facebook page where the online community then voted for the overall battle winner. To more details on the project and winner, head to The Galeries Facebook page.
