Anne ten Donkelaar lives in a beautiful apartment with a garden in Utrecht, Netherlands. With her boyfriend Vladi Rapaport and their cat Tuna. It’s here that she also works on her beautiful pieces.
“What I enjoy the most about being creative is the collecting of the materials and creating the composition.
I like working with flowers and insects because they are so small and complicated elements. I just fascinated from there forms and colors.”
Broken butterflies is a collection of damaged butterflies which were repaired in different ways, due to their needs. All the butterflies died of natural causes and were found in a garden in Amsterdam.
The “Blauw spinner” looks like it died at the moment it just came out of the cocoon. It was her inspiration for the body which consists of wrapped blue thread on a twig. A few treads are hanging loose like if the butterfly is about to brake out of his cocoon and slowly unrolling to freedom.
The “Medusozoa” was missing her body and the antennae and couldn’t fly. Anne created her a new set of flying tool, the parachute and propeller. The name was inspired by the movement of the Medusozoa.

Anne’s Flower constructions are collages made of a combination of pressed flowers and sprigs with cutouts of flowers images. Everything is placed on thin pins on differed highest which creates depth and dimension. Some of them reefer to a herbarium from imaginary flowers, and some to a new kind of flowers landscape.
