Knitting Is For

Drawing on inspiration from her experiences of living in the UK over the past few months and British culture. Polish-born, New York-based artist Olek is embarking on her first UK solo exhibition titled “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone”. Known world wide for her use of crocheted yarn. She uses the medium both indoors and on the street, creating major installations and sculptural environments, which are both delightful and meaningful.

Olek has a striking way of expressing creatively the things that inspire her. Resulting in playful and bright works which consist of multiple designs, including her trademark camouflage motif. Yet underneath there is a more complex and deeper meaning. Shown through the explicit messages crocheted into objects, they reveal her view of being a female artist. The text-based pieces replicate actual messages sent to the Olek, immortalising intimate details of her life.

What I love about Olek’s work is that you can look as deep as you want into the meaning of her pieces. If I was in London I would be making my way to see her exhibition. As with most installation and sculpture works, seeing it up close and personal gives you are whole different perspective.
